12:00-13:30 Introduction to multidisciplinary materials science (Jessell):
Overview of what it means to be a multi-disciplinary material scientist in the context of the European Union, and specifically we discuss:
- The fundamental Materials Science Pyramid: (Theory-Observation-Experiment-Simulation)
- What drives research in the different fields of Materials Science?
- The similarities and differences between materials.
- How to learn a new materials language (Journals, conference series, web sites...)

Informal Discussion Groups on a Career in Science:
- Science and Society- the role of research in the economic and social welfare of nations; gender roles in scientific careers; management of gender issues in a research environment; sustainable and appropriate development; the role of the researcher in developing science policy.
- Science Management- how to design a science project; human resource management; the training of the next generation of researchers; national and international collaborations; the financial management of research, intellectual property and patent law; the development of standards and platforms; safety in the workplace, conflict resolution.
- Scientific Communication- the communication of scientific ideas for a technical audience; the development of research proposals; science communication for a non-technical audience; oral presentation of scientific results.
